Disputes can arise in many different contexts. In principle, it is advisable to settle them by attempting to reach an agreement with the person concerned, if possible. However, this is not always easy, and whether with a private individual, an administrative authority or the criminal authorities, it is often the case that a dispute is settled before a judicial authority. Sometimes, there is no choice, as the authority is seized by another party or intervenes on its own initiative.

The judicial authorities are organized into three branches: the civil authorities, which deal with disputes between private individuals (natural persons or legal entities), the administrative authorities, which deal with disputes under public law (disputes against the administration, administrative measures) and the criminal authorities, which deal with criminal proceedings. Depending on the situation, it is necessary to address one of these authorities, bearing in mind that it is possible for a single dispute to give rise to proceedings before several authorities at the same time, whether civil, administrative or criminal.
